History of Netflix Australia

Netflix was started on 29th August, 1997, in Scotts Valley, California, USA by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings.

At the beginning Hastings invested $2.5 million cash for Netflix. Randolph was trying to create something like e-commerce company Amazon and was looking for a large category of convenient and portable items to sell over the internet by using analmost similar model. At first they thought about VHS tapes. However, they finally rejected VHS tapes as they were very expensive to store and too complicated to ship. As soon as they heard about compact disc (DVDs), which were not that much available in  the markets in 1997, they thought to give the concept a try and determined of renting or selling  DVDs by postal. To test the concept they mailed a DVD disc to Hastings' house. When the Compact disc reached intact, they finally decided to start thehome video sales and rental business.

Netflix was first launched on 14th April, 1998, with no more than 30 employees and 925 Compact disc (DVDs) available through the pay per rent model with rates and due dates that were almost similar to its rival, Blockbuster.
